Indoor Maths Trail

Indoor Maths Trail

Author: Lesley McConnachie, Maths teacher, Moray House School of Education and Sport

This activity is an ‘indoor maths trail’ suitable for pupils in early secondary school and older Primary school pupils to do in their homes: first using maths skills to create a map of the house, and then creating a ‘maths trail’ of activities using everyday household objects.  This task would be suitable for siblings from the same family to work on as a group task in the home.

Equipment required: ruler, paper, and various common household objects.  A compass is also needed to find North, but if you don’t have a compass there are free apps that can be downloaded for both Android and iPhone.

These worksheets will be suitable for pupils aged approximately from P6 to S2.

  • Fractions/Decimal/Percentages hexagon dominoes: a JPEG to print out and cut out (see picture on right).
    • Cut the pieces out, mix them up
    • One way of indicating whether the learner is successful is to see if the shape that they recreate is a rectangle.
  • Worksheet in Microsoft Word format: Negative numbers and subtraction of decimals
  • Diagram in PowerPoint format showing Equivalent Fractions
    • this could be used as a resource to use to help with working during an equivalent fraction lesson
    • an alternative possible learning activity could be to ask the learner to recreate the diagram accurately on squared paper (using a width of 24 squares would be helpful).  Possible questions to go along with this could include:
      • Why do all the eighths have to be the same size as each other?
      • How are you working out how big to make the boxes in each row?
      • How many 1/12s are equivalent to 1/6?
      • What does the last row represent?
      • What are 2 fractions that are equivalent to 1/8?

Maths Outdoor Learning Trail: Leith Walk

Author: Emma Elley, Maths and Physics teacher, Moray House School of Education and Sport

This resource is an Outdoor Learning Maths trail: a set of mathematical tasks and ideas of maths-related things you can look out for when about.  It is designed for anybody who is out and about in the Leith Walk/Elm Row/Calton Hill part of Edinburgh.

Of course, at the current time, this activity would have to be done in line with current Government guidelines on social distancing; but it could be suitable for an educational element of a socially-distanced daily walk.
